I just can't resist a sunrise. This is just before daybreak a few weeks ago. Mt. Hood in the background and the Portland Channel in the foreground. It was chilly morning, but I can't look down the channel without looking forward to summer nights when we'll pull our sailboat up to the dock at the Island Cafe, have dinner, and watch the reflection of the sunset on Mt. Hood.

Who says it rains all the time in the northwest? This picture was taken two weekends ago on the Oregon coast at Honeyman State Park. Behind the trees on the left side of the picture are sand dunes. We brought our kids over a couple of summers ago and they had a great time sandboarding. It's hard to believe that just on the other side of the dune at the end of the lake is the Pacific Ocean.

Coquille River Lighthouse
Bandon, Oregon
My favorite lighthouse just after sunrise.

As you'll see in future posts, I like to chase sunrises. One morning I was racing to the Columbia River to take a picture of sunrise over the Portland Channel. As I was driving quickly through the neighborhood, I noticed a heavy frost on the plants and shrubs and several potentially nice shots, but nothing was more important than getting to the river for sunrise. Unfortunately, when I got to my destination it was socked in with fog and there was no sunrise to see. It was that morning that I learned that you never run past one picture in pursuit of another that you may not get--the proverbial bird in the hand being worth two in the bush. On my way home, I stopped in a church parking lot filled with trees and bushes covered with frost and found what would come to be one of my favorite winter venues to use my macro lens.

A friend challenged me last summer to take a picture a day and post it on my blog. I was just making the switch from film to digital photography and didn't feel like I was getting what I wanted everyday. After ten months, I'm starting to feel comfortable with digital. I plan to post a favorite picture everyday in hopes that I will receive some feedback. I hope you enjoy my pictures. Elle.
